Option 1: Buying (direct purchase)

When you buy, you pay the full price once (2,000 to 15,000 EUR depending on the model). The machine is yours, there are no monthly instalments, and your profit is highest because no interest or rent applies. The downside: the initial investment ties up liquidity, and once the warranty ends you carry the fault risk yourself. Who buying pays off for: operators with capital and a proven location who want the maximum return over the long run. This is the classic CAPEX approach, invest today, earn over years.

Purchase, rental, leasing and revenue sharing in detail

Rental and leasing: the OPEX models

Instead of one large investment, you pay a monthly rate. Rental from a one-day term keeps you flexible and often includes maintenance. Leasing from 99 EUR/month protects liquidity, and the rates are deductible as an operating expense. For whom: newcomers and growing operations that want to keep capital for stock and locations.

Decision matrix

Do I have starting capital? -> No -> Leasing. Do I only need the machine for 3 months? -> Yes -> Rental. Do I want full service (delivery, setup, support)? -> Yes -> Rental. Do I want maximum profit long-term? -> Yes -> Purchase.

Special form: hire purchase

Similar to leasing, but at the end you automatically become the owner. It is recorded on your books (depreciation). Good for grants.

Our tip

For most vending start-ups, leasing or hire purchase is the golden middle ground. You protect your capital for stock and marketing, but own the machine in the end. For events, rental is unbeatable.

Revenue sharing

vyndo provides the machine, you share the revenue. No capital outlay needed, in return a lower margin per transaction.

Hire purchase: the best of both worlds

You pay monthly and automatically become the owner at the end. The instalments are credited against the purchase price.

Which financing model suits you?

The choice between renting and buying depends on three factors: available capital, planned term and appetite for risk. Buying pays off for long-term operation at a proven location, the highest ROI, but with CAPEX commitment. Rental is ideal for newcomers, test phases and temporary use (OPEX, from a one-day term). Leasing combines low rates with ownership at the end (from 99 EUR/month). Revenue sharing suits you if you do not want to put in capital and are willing to share the revenue. As a hardware-as-a-service model (HaaS), you only rent or lease the technology and keep the full margin on your goods. At vyndo you can combine all models: start with rental, switch to purchase once it succeeds.

Decision scenarios

Newcomer with little capital

A founder wants to start their first machine business but has only a 3,000 EUR budget. Solution: rental instead of purchase. After 6 months, telemetry shows whether the location is profitable. If it succeeds: switch to purchase or leasing for the next devices.

Operator with 10+ locations

An experienced operator wants to scale quickly. Instead of investing 100,000 EUR in 10 devices, they lease the fleet from 99 EUR/month per device. The machines fund themselves from ongoing revenue. At the end of the 36-month term, the devices are theirs.

Event organiser

For a 2-week trade fair, an organiser needs 3 machines. Buying would be uneconomical. Rental (short-term flat rate) covers delivery, setup and teardown. After the event, the devices are simply collected again.

Rent or buy: the detailed comparison

The decision between renting and buying is not a matter of belief but a calculation. Example: a snack machine costs 5,000 EUR to buy, or you rent it from a one-day term. At 40 transactions/day and a 2 EUR margin, the monthly gross profit is 2,400 EUR. With purchase: break-even after about 2.5 months. After that, full profit. With rental: positive cash flow from day 1, with no purchase cost. But after 34 months you have paid the purchase price in instalments, and own nothing. Bottom line: buying pays off from a planned use of 12+ months. Rental is more economical for short deployments or when you want to protect liquidity. TSE-compliant under KassenSichV, mandatory for every machine with a payment function since 2020.

Tax differences

When you buy, you depreciate the machine over its useful life (about 5 to 7 years). Leasing rates and rent, by contrast, are immediately deductible as operating expenses (OPEX). In the first years this can be more advantageous for tax. Tip: talk to your tax advisor about which model is most effective for your situation.

Checklist: when to buy, when to rent?

Buy when: the location is proven, a term of 12+ months is planned, capital is available, maximum ROI is wanted. Rent when: it is a first location (test), a temporary deployment, budget is tight, maintenance should be included. Lease when: long-term operation is planned, you want to protect liquidity, use tax benefits, and want ownership at the end.

Frequent questions: rent or buy

From when does buying pay off instead of renting?

From a planned use of 12+ months. For shorter periods, renting is more economical.

Can I switch from renting to buying?

Yes. At vyndo we offer hire purchase options. Part of the rent you have paid is credited against the purchase price.

What happens at the end of the leasing term?

You have three options: buy the device at its residual value, extend the contract, or return the device and switch to a newer model.

Is maintenance included with rental?

With many of our rental packages, yes. This covers technical fault resolution. Filling and cleaning are down to you as the operator.

How does revenue sharing work?

vyndo sets up the machine at the location. You operate it (filling). The revenue is split by an agreed formula. No capital outlay needed.

Which financing option does vyndo recommend?

For newcomers: rental to test. For experienced operators with proven locations: purchase or leasing for maximum ROI.

Is there a minimum term for rental?

No, rental is possible from just one day. For events we offer short-term flat rates from a few days.
