Public Vending: The Supreme Discipline

Simply putting a machine on the pavement does not work. For public vending you need special hardware and permits. vyndo supports you with that. Our city line is extremely tough (vandalism class IK10) and designed to be streetscape-compliant – no junk look. We offer housings in anthracite or street-furniture design that city planners accept. Ideal as a kiosk replacement in places where there is no room for a building.

Location Criteria

Footfall

The more pedestrians, the better. Stops, tourist routes, party miles.

Visibility

Good lighting and clear sightlines (social control) protect against vandalism.

Power

A connection has to be laid (often possible via street lamps or distribution boxes).

Legal Matters

Apply for a special-use permit at the public order office/civil engineering office. We supply the technical drawings for it.

Products for the City

Drinks (water, soft drinks), snacks, vapes (with age control), umbrellas, tourist info (maps, tickets) and hygiene items.

Plug-and-Play

The machine arrives ready to operate. Set it up, connect the power, load the goods – your machine for outdoor / city centre is ready to go immediately.

Vending Solutions for Outdoor / City Centre

Simply putting a machine on the pavement does not work: public vending in public space needs tough hardware and a special-use permit from the city. vyndo supplies the city line – weatherproof, in vandalism class IK10 and in a streetscape-compliant design in anthracite or street-furniture look that authorities accept. That way a machine replaces a kiosk in places where there is no room for a building. The 43–55" touchscreen plays third-party advertising between sales and refinances the running costs via DOOH revenue. For the permit, read the guide Setting up a vending machine: permits.

Vending Machines in Outdoor / City Centre: Practical Examples

Kiosk Replacement at a Transport Hub

An operator puts a vyndo city machine at a busy stop. Range: drinks, snacks and charging cables. Commuters pay contactless by smartphone. Via the telemetry app the operator sees which products run at which time of day, and restocks in a targeted way. The machine replaces a kiosk without anyone having to be on site.

City Machine With a DOOH Advertising Space

In a pedestrian zone stands a vyndo premium machine with a large touchscreen. Between sales the digital signage screen plays advertising for local businesses. This advertising income covers part of the special-use and power costs – a second revenue stream alongside product sales in public space.

Drinks Machine on the Promenade

A weatherproof drinks machine supplies passers-by on a waterfront promenade with water, soft drinks and energy drinks. The cooling holds 3–7 °C, and the housing is protected against rain and vandalism. Payment is by card or Apple Pay. In the summer months and during events, sales of cold drinks rise noticeably.

Vending Machine in Outdoor / City Centre: Costs and ROI

A vending machine in an outdoor / city-centre location pays off when footfall and range are right. High pedestrian traffic, but factor in permit costs and weather protection. The investment starts at 2,000 € for simple hot-drink machines and reaches up to 15,000 € for premium units with cooling, touchscreen and digital signage display. Running costs are manageable: power (3–5 kWh/day for cooled units), goods purchase and an optional SIM card for telemetry. At a gross margin of about 50%, a well-placed machine pays for itself in 6–12 months. Rental (from a one-day term) and leasing (from 99 €/month) lower the entry barrier further.

Location Requirements in Outdoor / City Centre

For a machine in public space you need a special-use permit, a power connection – often achievable via street lamps or distribution boxes – and a weatherproof, vandal-proof build. Choose a well-lit, visible position: social control protects against damage. An anti-graffiti coating and floor anchoring make sense. vyndo supplies streetscape-compliant city-line units and the technical drawings for the application.

Range Recommendation and Stocking

For city locations we recommend drinks, snacks, umbrellas, charging cables and hygiene items – at selected spots also vapes with age verification. After a few weeks the telemetry software shows you the bestsellers by time of day. Focus on 2–3 strong items and add seasonally. For tobacco and alcohol, technical age control is mandatory. TSE-compliant under the KassenSichV – mandatory for every machine with a payment function.

Frequently Asked Questions City

What does the permit for public space cost?

The special-use permit costs, depending on the city and the area used, usually between 50 and 500 €/year, and in large cities with a top location even more. On top of that come requirements on design, space and traffic safety. The fee is an ongoing item in your calculation, which you partly recoup through DOOH advertising income. Ask the public order or civil engineering office in advance about the specific requirements. Details can be found in the guide Setting up a vending machine: permits.

How do I protect the machine from graffiti?

With an anti-graffiti coating that paint sticks to poorly and that wipes off easily. In addition, a well-lit, visible setup and a tough housing in vandalism class IK10 help. That way the machine stays presentable even on busy party miles. Our city line is designed exactly for this strain in public space. A regular visual check during restocking keeps the condition in view.

Is age verification mandatory?

Yes. For tobacco, vapes and alcohol the youth protection law requires technical age verification – for example by ID or driving-licence scan. Without this function you are not allowed to sell such products through the machine. On request, vyndo equips the city line with a certified verification system. For drinks, snacks and other unrestricted goods no age check is needed.

Do I have to take back deposits?

Machines that sell deposit-liable drinks are in principle also obliged to take them back – with exceptions for very small sales areas. The rule is complex and depends on the range and the setup. In practice, take-back can be handled via a separate reverse vending machine or a cooperation. vyndo advises you on a deposit-compliant configuration for your city location.

What insurance do I need in public space?

For setting up in public space, business liability insurance is mandatory. It covers damage that the machine could cause to third parties. Many municipalities already require proof of insurance when applying for the special-use permit. Expect around 100–200 €/year. That way you are legally covered when your machine stands in a busy square.

Does the machine withstand wind and weather?

Yes. The city line is built weatherproof, with protection against rain and moisture as well as optional heating and cooling for year-round operation. The housing in vandalism class IK10 also withstands impacts. That way the machine works reliably on promenades, squares and at transport hubs – in any weather. Floor anchoring additionally ensures stability.

How often does the machine need restocking?

At high-traffic city locations often several times a week, at quieter spots less often. The telemetry software automatically notifies you when a product falls below the minimum stock – so you only drive out to restock when it is worthwhile. In public space this is especially valuable, because sales depend heavily on weather, time of day and events. This reliably avoids empty compartments for water and snacks.
