Vending machine with card payment: no coins, higher sale

No exact change, no purchase, and every cashless prospect who walks away from your machine is lost revenue. A cashless terminal catches exactly those purchases: NFC, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Girocard in under a second. The average sale rises because no one is limited any more by the coins in their pocket.

Why a machine without cards loses revenue

Younger audiences and business customers rarely carry cash. A machine with coin slots only loses every one of these buyers at the front. With a vyndo cashless module you accept Girocard, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay and smartwatch wallets. That lowers the barrier to impulse purchases and raises the average sale, because the purchase no longer fails for lack of change. Contactless amounts under 50 euros usually go through without a PIN, so the process takes milliseconds instead of seconds.

Advantages of cashless payment

Higher revenue

Card payers buy more often on impulse and reach more readily for the pricier product, because no change limits them. The average sale rises measurably.

Hygienic

Holding a card or phone up contactlessly is cleaner than touching coins.

Less operating effort

You count, roll and carry less cash to the bank. That lowers the admin effort and the risk of theft at the location.

Faster purchase

Hold up, beep, take the goods. No time wasted inserting money.

Telemetry included

Most card terminals from Nayax and Ingenico deliver the revenue and fault data straight into your dashboard.

Technology: MDB and retrofitting

Our terminals work with the industry standard MDB (Multi-Drop Bus) and the DEX interface. That lets them connect to almost any machine, including older models in a retrofit. You receive the terminal pre-configured: plug in, activate the payment contract, sell. The revenue goes weekly or monthly straight to your bank account.

Cost structure

A cashless terminal usually involves a small monthly service fee for the terminal and SIM card, plus a transaction fee (discount rate) per sale, typically a few percent or cents. At the usual vending amounts, that share stays low. Measured against the extra revenue from cashless buyers, the retrofit pays off quickly at most locations.

Card payment in practice

Retrofit on existing machines

An operator upgrades older snack vending machines to card payment via an MDB terminal. No new hardware, no change of location. After the retrofit, the share of cashless purchases rises noticeably, because business customers at the location rarely carry cash anyway.

Hotel lobby: card plus cash

In a hotel lobby stands a machine with hybrid payment: an NFC terminal plus a coin and note unit. Guests without local currency pay by Apple Pay or credit card, cash customers stay served. No buyer leaves empty-handed because of the payment method.

Office: closed RFID system

A company links the break-room machine to employee badges (RFID loop). Staff pay cashless with their works badge, and subsidised prices are stored. Billing runs centrally, with no cash handling at the machine.

Why card payment makes the difference

Card payment today decides whether a purchase happens at all. Anyone without cash simply doesn't buy without a terminal. With a cashless module you catch these purchases and raise the average sale at the same time. vyndo integrates payment via the industry standard MDB directly into the hardware, compatible with Nayax, Ingenico and other payment providers. No lock-in to a single provider. Management runs through our CMS software in the browser: change prices, maintain the range, analyse revenue, all remotely without an on-site visit. Important: every machine with a payment function has been subject to TSE requirements since 2020 under the KassenSichV. vyndo ships its machines TSE-compliant. You can find more on models and costs on the Buy a vending machine page.

Technical specifications

Our terminals work with the industry standards MDB and DEX/DDCMP. Software updates run over the air (OTA). The payment terminal supports NFC, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Girocard and credit cards. Telemetry sends revenue and fault data via WLAN or a mobile SIM. Display options: 15 to 43 inches, Full HD, optionally with touch.

Costs and financing

A single MDB terminal costs only a fraction of a new machine and can be retrofitted to your existing units. New machines with integrated card payment cost between 3,000 and 15,000 euros net to buy. Rental from a one-day term, leasing from 99 euros/month net. The surcharge over cash-only models pays for itself through the higher average sale and the additional cashless purchases.

Frequently asked questions about card payment

Do I need WLAN?

No. The terminals from Nayax and Ingenico have a 4G SIM card built in and are online at almost any location. WLAN is optional. Without a separate internet connection, authorisation and telemetry run over the mobile network, and clearing a transaction usually takes under a second.

Is the data secure?

Yes. The terminals are certified to PCI-DSS, the binding security standard of the card industry. Card data is not stored in the machine but transmitted encrypted to the payment provider and processed there. With NFC payments, the radio range is a few centimetres, so accidental payment while walking past is practically ruled out. The short authorisation chain also protects against manipulation: the machine only forwards the payment, while the actual clearing happens at the provider. For you as the operator, that means you hold no sensitive customer data and don't have to secure your own payment infrastructure.

Can I still take cash too?

Yes. At many locations we recommend hybrid machines: an NFC terminal plus a coin changer and note reader in one machine. That way the machine serves both cashless buyers and cash customers, and no one leaves empty-handed because of the payment method. Especially at locations with a mixed audience, such as hotels or stations, this secures every possible sale. Cash-only machines make sense where the audience rarely carries cash anyway, for example in the office or the clinic. Which combination suits your location, we calculate in the quote.

How long does the credit take?

That depends on the payment provider. A pooled credit to your bank account is common, usually daily or weekly. You set the exact terms in the payment contract, which you conclude together with vyndo through one of the connected providers such as Nayax or Ingenico. The revenue does not run through vyndo, but goes directly from the provider to your account, so you keep full control over your income. In the dashboard you see every transaction in real time, and the payout follows the agreed rhythm. Additional fees only apply as the usual discount rate per sale.

What about tips?

Some terminals allow a tipping option (for coffee-to-go).

Does it work abroad?

Yes. Credit cards from Visa, Mastercard and American Express work internationally, as do Apple Pay and Google Pay. The Girocard is usually limited to Germany and the EU. At locations with an international audience, such as hotels or stations, a credit-card-capable terminal is therefore essential.

Can I use employee badges?

Yes. For canteens and company premises we integrate closed RFID systems (closed loop). Your staff pay with their employee badge, and subsidised or flat-rate prices can be stored per badge group. Billing runs centrally through the system, with no cash handling at the machine and without each purchase having to be settled individually. This suits free-vending or subsidy models especially well, where the employer covers all or part of the catering. The badge then serves as both an access and a payment medium, so no additional card is needed. You see the revenue and withdrawals in the dashboard, broken down by group.
